What's your name?

Thursdays in the Atelier are usually planned out, set up and ready to go by the time our friends are ready to head down the hall. This Thursday though, Miss Hannah let the kiddos lead her in what they wanted to do when they got there. White pieces of paper were laid out with markers, crayons, paint sticks and chalk and away they went. No instruction needed, just do whatever your sweet mind thinks to do; and oh, how fun it really was.

When done with their masterpieces they were told they could have another piece of paper, or they could explore the room a bit and find something else. One friend asked for another piece so a lot more were also handed out. After a little time went by, our first friend asked, "Is this in my name?", with what looked to be the beginning of an attempt to write the first letter in their name. So, we decided to build off of that one friend, after a few more asked how to write theirs.

We wrote their names at the top of each paper and asked them to try and copy the letter without a teacher to see just how cool it turned out. Some friends started pointing out the letters they made to me, spelling their names. Watching them be so interested in their own identity opens the doors for so many fun activities, games to be played, and songs to be sung. The future in our classroom seems so bright with this group!
