Choo Choo! Train Counting!

Image
On Friday our invitation in the BMR was Train Car Counting! The floor was lined with Magna Tiles and White Paper with a Choo Choo Engine and blank spaces for the kids to create the train cars all the way to the caboose! On the bottom of each piece of paper is a number to help with their number identification and this activity helps with the time sequence of first, next, then!  The kiddos had a lot of fun with activity from making train noises to creating their train cars! After they were finished, they wanted to use the magna tiles to make a train station for their trains to stop at! We unfortunately didn't have enough time to do that, but it gives a fun thing to try next week!  This group is so special, and I love to see the way they lead an activity!  Indiana Early Learning Foundations: M1.1: Demonstrate strong sense of counting, M1.2: Demonstrate understanding of written numerals, M1.3: Recognition of number relations, M2.1: Exhibit understand...

Things That Move!

Image
The theme this week in the Almond Room is Things that Move! The kids were asked, "What are some things that move?" and the first thing everyone yells out is "Cars!" Next one I heard was "Excavators!" and "Airplanes!" All great answers and it helped that I already printed out pictures of some of these things and placed them around the room. After some questions about what you see on these transportation vehicles, I asked "What do they all have that is the same?" It's a door and Windows!  Our invitation on Wednesday-Friday was pictures of things that moved, construction vehicles, art and books! I loved getting to see what the kids created with the paint sticks and markers, and when they played with their new construction vehicles on the train table.  In our block area I tried to tie in our theme to the best of our abilities and see where the children took it. This week the kids took the blocks onto the train table and the floor and o...

Mud Tracks and Car Painting!

Image
This week we read "The Little Blue Truck" and talked about the way the dump truck and blue got stuck in the mud! During Circle time any time I asked what a dump truck or tractor drove in the most common answer was MUD!! So, on Wednesday when we finished reading the book a second time, we got an idea to take the tractor and unfortunately our garbage truck, because we don't have a large dump truck, and drive them through brown and orange paint to make mud tracks!  A little while after Miss Hannah got to thinking and decided why not try out some car painting, and they loved it! It became a big mix and mess of paint and full of smiles from all the kiddos! They did the exact same thing as the tractor but with smaller cars and more colors of paint. My favorite thing about this craft was just how easy it was to let them take over and experiment with it. I think that might be part of my favorite thing about the Reggio aspect. Watching the child lead an activity is so fascinating ...

What's your name?

Image
Thursdays in the Atelier are usually planned out, set up and ready to go by the time our friends are ready to head down the hall. This Thursday though, Miss Hannah let the kiddos lead her in what they wanted to do when they got there. White pieces of paper were laid out with markers, crayons, paint sticks and chalk and away they went. No instruction needed, just do whatever your sweet mind thinks to do; and oh, how fun it really was.       When done with their masterpieces they were told they could have another piece of paper, or they could explore the room a bit and find something else. One friend asked for another piece so a lot more were also handed out. After a little time went by, our first friend asked, "Is this in my name?", with what looked to be the beginning of an attempt to write the first letter in their name. So, we decided to build off of that one friend, after a few more asked how to write theirs.      We wrote their names at the ...
